The midday update from the Storm Prediction Center shows a rather expansive increase in the area covered by a slightly higher tornado risk. This morning that 5% area seen above was only in Minnesota. It now covers much of northwest Iowa. This is where severe thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon. All modes of severe weather will be possible this afternoon across northwest Iowa, Minnesota, as well as separately over Indiana and Ohio.
Another troubling sign in the growing confidence that the severe weather risk will persist into the overnight hours. Although the tornado threat will begin to diminish after sunset, strong winds and especially large hail will remain a threat across the rest of Iowa.
We will continue to monitor this developing situation and be sure to join us back here this afternoon and evening for live coverage. WeatherLiveTV’s Ben McMillan will share his live video stream here on the Iowa Storm Chasing Network. We’ll have that up and running in a few hours and will pass along to you when it is viewable.
